The National Park Service today released the Draft Environmental Impact Statement regarding personal watercraft use at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (Lake Powell), located in Arizona and Utah.

The document is available online at http://www.nps.gov/glca/pwceis/pwchome.htm.

The following statement may be attributed to Jeff Ludwig, Regulatory Affairs Manager of the Personal Watercraft Industry Association:

“We’re happy that Lake Powell has finally released its draft EIS, and we generally support Alternative B, the Preferred Alternative.

Alternative B would impose new restrictions on personal watercraft use in several sections of the park, including a backcountry area and sections of rivers popular with whitewater rafters and fishermen. PWIA respects and supports the rights of all Lake Powell visitors to enjoy their preferred forms of recreation, and we appreciate that Alternative B respects and supports the rights of personal watercraft users to enjoy their recreational choice.

PWIA is eager to work with Glen Canyon NRA officials in their boating safety education activities, as well as in their efforts to ensure that boating regulations are consistent among the National Park Service, Arizona, and Utah.”
