IRVINE, Calif. - Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A., has introduced breakthrough steering technology that leads the personal watercraft industry.

Personal watercraft (PWC) are small, popular boats that carry between one and three passengers and are powered by a water jet pump.

This breakthrough, cutting edge system, dubbed Kawasaki Smart Steering TM, provides turning action to the JET SKI ® watercraft even if the throttle is not applied, under certain conditions. Smart Steering technology detects the rider's steering input as well as the speed of operation and automatically increases engine speed to provide additional thrust for turning. This advanced steering system continuously monitors engine rpm to determine if the craft is being operated at a low or high speed. If the speed is low, the system does not operate. If the speed is high, the system will operate, activated by release of the throttle and full steering input.

Kawasaki Smart Steering technology can assist riders in learning to negotiate turns and maneuver, making turning even easier and smoother. Average riders may not notice the system at all, since they realize throttle application is required during turning. But, if they should get in a situation where they momentarily forget to apply throttle, the system will be there to assist them also.

This new technology, first introduced on model year 2001 Kawasaki's JET SKI watercraft, is found on two 2002 machines, the 1100 STX D.I. and the Ultra 130 D.I.
