New Technology to help ensure end to unnecessary restrictions

Washington, DC - The Personal Watercraft Industry Association (PWIA) applauds Yamaha's introduction of the four-stroke engine personal watercraft, utilizing technology universally accepted as some of the cleanest, quietest, and most fuel-efficient available today. The engine unveiled today is a result of years of research and hundreds of millions of dollars spent on environmentally sound technologies.

"As environmental stewards, the personal watercraft industry is committed to developing technologies for clean air and water," said Monita Fontaine, Executive Director of the Personal Watercraft Industry Association. "The fuel efficient four-stroke engine saves PWC consumers money, and its noticeably quiet technology meets the most stringent EPA exhaust emissions. Recognizing the call of the public for ever safer, cleaner and quieter personal watercraft, the four-stroke PWC will help serve as an end to needless restrictions and bans on America's waterways."

The industry manufacturers have invested enormous resources in the last several years creating personal watercraft that are up to 75 percent cleaner and 70 percent quieter than 1998 models. In less than a decade the personal watercraft industry has attained the same level of engine emission reductions it took the automobile industry 25 years to achieve. This new personal watercraft engine meets and exceeds the government's strict environmental regulations, in addition to other personal watercraft models already meeting the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2006 emission standards.

"This is a win-win situation where we will have cleaner air and cleaner water and people will be able to continue to enjoy these recreational vehicles," said Ron Roberts, California Air Resources Board Member and San Diego County Supervisor.

The Personal Watercraft Industry Association (PWIA), located in Washington, DC, was formed as an affiliate of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). The members of PWIA are Bombardier Recreational Products, Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A., Polaris Industries Inc. and Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A. PWIA was created to unite manufacturers and distributors of personal watercraft (PWC) in order to promote safe and responsible operation of personal watercraft and work with federal, state and local regulatory agencies. Membership is open to manufacturers of personal watercraft who are also members of NMMA.
