Chicago - Personal Watercraft Industry Association (PWIA) has announced that it has hired a new Executive Director, Monita Fontaine.

In her new role, Fontaine is responsible for the overall management of PWIA. She is a lawyer by training and has spent the past three years operating her private law firm in Washington, DC. Prior to that, Fontaine was Director of State Government Relations for the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) and previously served as Executive Director and General Counsel to the Licensed Beverage Information Council. She has practiced law in Alaska, Texas and Washington, DC. She was appointed briefing attorney for a senior justice on the 4th Circuit United States Court of Appeals and served as a legislative assistant on Capitol Hill. An avid sailor, Fontaine has skippered her wooden sailboat across the Atlantic and throughout the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

Fontaine received her B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) in Political Science and Economics from Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia, her J.D. (Juris Doctor) from St. Mary's University School of Law in San Antonio, TX, and her LL.M. (Master of Laws) in Ocean and Coastal Law from the University of Miami School of Law.

PWIA brings together member companies who manufacture or distribute personal watercraft so that several key industry objectives can be achieved. Those objectives are to promote safe and responsible operation of personal watercraft among consumers; to encourage recommended design and engineering practices for safety and ease of operation; and to work with federal, state and local agencies that have regulatory responsibilities for recreational boating. For more information, contact PWIA at (202) 721-1621.
